SF Commissions Under Scrutiny

Image
点击这里查看中文 Dear Neighbors and Friends, We are learning a great deal about our city's political system through our grassroots efforts to stop the proposed cannabis dispensary at the Gold Mirror Restaurant. We are not civic members, politically inclined toward any government agencies, nor are we particularly well-connected with any local officials. Instead, like many San Franciscans, we are fed up with the grave dysfunction we see in our city's governance, particularity when it comes to our 130 commission groups,  such as our Board of Supervisors or Planning Commission, which have turned a blind eye and deaf ear to our requests, suggestions, concerns, etc., regarding the dispensary. We are not the only group raising concerns. According to this recent  blog from Together SF, " our commissions are legally insulated from public accountability, [therefore] public discourse has turned to the question of whether this is an effective way to structure such important governmental decis...

Public Hearing Date Postponed

Image
点击这里查看中文 Dear Neighbors & Supporters, The public hearing date for the Gold Mirror Dispensary, originally scheduled for Jan 5th, 2023, has been postponed by SF Planning to Feb 2nd, 2023. We only learned about this postponement after noticing that no information about the hearing was being posted on the SF Planning web site, nor did the owners of the Gold Mirror post any information outside their restaurant, which is required by law. So, we pressed SF Planning to tell us what is going on and that's when they admitted it. Apparently, SF Planning is known for playing these games and baiting and switching the dates to throw off any opposition from the public.  We were naive enough to fall for it and we apologize. Therefore, please take the new hearing date with a grain of salt. This time we will wait until there is a proper notice posted outside the Gold Mirror restaurant before we mention anything to you again.. Thank you for your understanding and we hope you and your loved ones h...

Cannabis Use Soars Among Youth

Image
Dear Friends & Neighbors, As much as our opponents would like you to believe, we are not fear mongering when we say a cannabis dispensary poses a clear danger to the children in our neighborhood. We are not making this stuff up, as our claims are backed by a new Gallup Poll analysis and facts and statistics presented in  this article from the New York Post. The Power of Your Voice

Image
Dear Friends and Neighbors, I was inspired today by an email I received from Dr. Roneet Lev at High Truths , a site dedicated to bringing health professionals together to find ways to prevent drug addiction. I wrote to Dr. Lev to ask for her advice for opposing the proliferation of cannabis dispensaries here in SF and the fact that the city backs them financially and legally. For a small, not politically-connected group like our own, this can be a daunting, almost David & Goliath-type of task. This is the advice Dr. Lev gave to me: Don’t underestimate the power of your voice and activism. The city of Compton rose up against dispensaries and won! Perhaps you can make the argument that the cost of these dispensaries is a 4:1 loss - for every tax dollar made, there are 4 dollar spend in healthcare, mental health, crime, and homelessness. For medical information on harms, view the IASIC1.org medical library. The first sentence about not underestimating the power of our voice really st...

Save the Date! Public Hearing Has Been Set.

Image
Dear Friends & Neighbors, The Gold Mirror Cannabis Dispensary Public Hearing has been set. Date: Thursday, Jan 5th, 2023 Time: 1pm Place: City Hall The agenda will be posted on the Office of Planning's web site one week prior to the hearing date, along with the WebEx link. Please attend in person or via WebEx or phone, and provide your comments to the planning commissioners, much like we did at the GWPNA meeting earlier this month. After hearing our comments, the planning commissioners will vote amongst themselves whether to approve the permit for the Gold Mirror dispensary or not. The more people who attend and voice their opposition, the better chance we have of convincing the planning commission to reject the permit. If you need any language assistance, please let us know which languages and we will arrange for interpreters to be at the hearing. Please stay tuned to our web site for more details. Finally we will be holding a neighborhood pre-hearing meeting on Thursday, De...

Legal vs. Moral: Candy-Flavored Edibles

Image
Dear Neighbors and Friends, We recently received a comment on our web site from an anonymous neighbor, whose name is "SF resident," and who seems to have misconceptions about our FOPSWP movement. Therefore, we'd like to take the time to clear up those misconceptions below.  SF Resident comments in blue font . FOPSWP comments in red font. I suggest the people behind this effort take the time to visit other dispensaries in the city and familiarize themselves with the operations. Because of local ordinances, dispensaries are some of the most clean, well-supervised, well-lit, well-secured businesses in SF. We have indeed visited several dispensaries in the city, and we do not have an issue with how they are run or who runs them, but rather with what they are selling and to whom. None of the existing dispensaries we visited is in as child-centric an area as the one proposed for 18th & Taraval. The nature of this location makes us wonder whether the business is targeting no...

1,000 Signatures - Thank You!

Image
Dear Neighbors & Supporters, We are pleased to announce that we have surpassed 1,000 signatures.  Thank you very much for helping us to reach this important milestone in our effort to stop the Gold Mirror cannabis dispensary from opening in our neighborhood. More good news.....we successfully secured the support of the Greater West Portal Neighborhood Association (GWPNA) to oppose the dispensary. The vote took place last night during GWPNA's December meeting, and 50% of the members voted to support our opposition, while 42% voted to support the dispensary. Here is the official letter.   We won, but by a narrow margin, therefore we are not relaxing our effort until the public hearing, which takes place on Thursday, Dec. 5th, 2023. The planning commissioners will decide at this meeting whether or not to approve the permit for the dispensary, therefore please continue to support us and, most importantly, please clear your calendars and plan to be at the public hearing either...
