We Are Appealing!

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Thank you for all of your support at the public hearing last Thursday, Feb. 2nd. There was an outpouring of supporters, both in-person and online, who voted overwhelmingly against the conditional use cannabis permit for the Green Mirror, but as we anticipated, it was unanimously approved by the planning commissioners, who clearly have a different agenda in mind than the District 7 residents. We were touched by the sincere and heartfelt pleas made by our neighbors, who deeply care about our neighborhood and believe a cannabis dispensary at 18th Ave & Taraval St is not a good fit, based on parking conditions, the prevalence of schools and children and teens who frequent the intersection, the nearby availability of other dispensaries, availability of online delivery, etc. 

So, what kind of system ignores its constituents and votes unanimously to approve a permit or other proposition at a public hearing, where over 50 people show up and over 80% of them say no? A broken system. This is in addition to the over 1,700 signatures we gathered over the past year from residents opposing the dispensary. All of this dismissed and ignored by those we elect and choose to put into power. 

Having said that, we are starting the appeal process to overturn the decision made by the planning commissioners, and so please do not give up this fight. Also, please keep in mind that both D7 Supervisor Melgar and Mayor Breed are up for re-election in November of 2024, and so we are going to make it loud and clear to them that if they continue to support the Green Mirror dispensary, then they will lose our votes. 

Therefore, please continue to stay abreast of the latest news and events here at our web site, and please continue to share our message with your neighbors and other residents who have similar concerns for the welfare of our city.

Dear Friends & Neighbors, In case you missed it, we held our housing townhall last Tuesday, 2/13, at Miraloma Clubhouse. We had a modest turnout, and an excellent dialogue with panelists and neighbors surrounding the pros and cons of the new housing mandates. Matt Boschetto, who is running for D7 Supervisor, hosted and moderated the townhall. I believe there will be a video recording of the event coming out soon. I will share it with you when it is ready. In Part 1 of this blog,  I wrote how the new densification and upzoning laws are being forced upon the city by the state, without proper feedback or consensus from the neighborhoods themselves. One of the panelists at the townhall, Mr. Corey Smith, from  Housing Action Coalition , made it clear that municipalities no longer have the choice of "opting out" of these new laws. What About the Housing Mandates (Part 1/2)

Dear Friends & Neighbors, If you have been following the new housing mandates and rezoning laws in the least bit, you are probably confused and shocked about what is going to happen in our District 7. I have attended two housing townhall meetings in recent weeks, one in D4, hosted by Sunset United Neighborhoods , and one in D3, hosted by Telegraph Hill Dwellers . And judging by the reactions from the crowds, people are not happy. There is more to the housing debate than what meets the eye. In a nutshell, Sacramento wants us to believe that California has a housing crisis and more construction is needed to meet the state's housing needs. So the state is essentially mandating that San Francisco, along with other cities, propose and pass all sorts of new rules and regulations to meet these needs.  Building more houses is normal and necessary, The problem arises when Sacramento decides to force cities to comply with its mandates...

Matt Boschetto for D7 Supervisor

Dear Friends & Neighbors, I am a registered Democrat voter. However, I find it ironic how Democrats demonize Donald Trump and the Republican party, accusing them as being authoritarian with no regard for laws, rules, or the democratic process, while at the same time,  Democrats are guilty of doing the same thing. I am not a Trump supporter as I do agree he has an authoritarian bent, but at the same time I do not support hypocrisy and authoritarian threats from my own party, and will point it out wherever I see it. For example, in my last blog, I wrote about my own neighborhood's voice being stripped and crippled when we objected to the Gold Mirror cannabis dispensary opening on 18th Ave & Taraval St., or how our neighbors' voices across the state of California are consistently suppressed for their opposition to the new housing laws and regulations that are being forced upon our cities, including San Francisco, by state officials.
