Ms. Rachel Tanner, Please Apologize
Dear Friends & Supporters,
During the public hearing for the Gold Mirror cannabis dispensary earlier this month, the president of the planning commission, Ms. Rachel Tanner, referred to the public participants, who voted overwhelmingly against the dispensary, as "racist, liars, and misinformed." At first, we did not fully understand the scope and reality of what she was trying to convey to us. It wasn't until after the hearing ended and we went home, that the impact from her statements started to sink in.
Needless to say, these comments were uncalled for and highly disconcerting. The reason is most of the participants at the hearing were Asian, young and old, male and female, from diverse backgrounds, attending both virtually and in-person. To label them as racist and liars -- for nothing more than voicing their concerns about the dispensary -- does not seem like something that would happen in a city like San Francisco, but it did. You can view a video of Ms. Tanner giving her comments here.
We're sure the planning commission and the city of San Francisco will deny that this is what Ms. Tanner meant and that we misunderstood her or took her comments out of context, but we are not buying that. Instead we are kindly requesting a formal apology from Ms. Tanner.
In addition, we are asking for your help. Please share the YouTube video of Ms. Tanner with as many of your friends, family, and co-workers as you can. Because as sad as it sounds, the only way most public officials will step up and do what is right is if we shine a bright light on their actions from as many angles as possible. They will not do this of their own accord, but only if enough of us demand it and bring their positions and reputations into question.
Again, it's disheartening to have to say that, but let's step up and do what is right even if our city leaders and representatives will not. It's bad enough that our entire country is painfully divided along social, racial, political, and economic lines, so was it really necessary for Ms. Tanner to add to this division by calling us racist? We are ordinary, working class residents and business owners, who took time out of our busy schedules to attend a public hearing and vote on an issue that we felt deeply and strongly about. So, no, this was not necessary and we ask that Ms. Tanner apologize for her statements. Let's teach those who represent us what it means to take accountability and responsibility for their actions, and that we are closely watching their every move, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem to them.
