Public Hearing Date Set for Gold Mirror Dispensary

The hearing date for the Gold Mirror cannabis dispensary (proposed name "Green Mirror") has been set for Thursday, January 5th, 2023. This will be a hybrid meeting with both in-persona and online access. Time, location, and Zoom link for the hearing will be shared soon. It's imperative you join us, preferably in person, as this will make a stronger impression on the planning commissioners, who will vote during the hearing whether or not to approve the cannabis permit for the Gold Mirror. 

Some background information.....

We held a debate with the proponents and opponents of the dispensary at last month's Greater West Portal Neighborhood Association (GWPNA), and three points became immensely clear during the debate.

1) The Gold Mirror owners are using the proposed dispensary to help subsidize their supposedly "ailing" restaurant business. As much as we enjoy the food and drinks from the Gold Mirror restaurant and would like to see it prosper, we think there are other, less detrimental options the owners can consider to supplement their income. We have all been affected by the pandemic, but opening up more dispensaries is not the solution.

2) The Fig & Thistle Apothecary owners, who are partners with the Gold MIrror owners, when asked how much THC their products contained, struggled to answer this question. This is especially concerning since they are selling products, such as Sundae School and gummies, fruit chews, and chocolates, all clearly aimed at youngsters. 

3) The science is clear. Dr. Daniel Amen, one of the leading experts in mental health in the US, has performed tens of thousands of brain scans on all sorts of subjects. You can see his results here on marijuana users. As you can see, regular marijuana use significantly impairs cognitive function. The Office of Cannabis and the dispensary owners will not admit to this fact, because they want to sell more cannabis. That's their business model.

If you'll recall, not too long ago, the SF vape company JUUL was sued for hundreds of millions of dollars for marketing its flavored products to teens and children. So why is the city and the cannabis industry it supports so earnestly now immune from this type of public criticism and scrutiny? Why the double standard? 

Therefore, we ask you to please research the cannabis industry carefully and draw your own conclusions about the placement of a cannabis retail shop on the corner of Taraval St & 18th Ave. Is this good judgement in light of the hundreds of school-age children who use this intersection each day to travel to and from school and after-school related activities?
