The Gold Mirror Dispensary - A Conversation

On Wed, Nov. 2nd, 7-8:30pm, the Greater West Portal Neighborhood Association (GWPNA) will kindly host a dialogue between proponents and opponents of the Gold Mirror cannabis dispensary. We urge you to attend so that we can hear your feedback and comments. 

During the meeting, there will be a presentation by the project sponsors with time for Q&A and a presentation by the neighbors and business owners adjacent to the Gold Mirror on why they oppose the permit at this location with time for Q&A.

Dear Ms. Melgar & Planning Commissioners,

My name is <Your Name Here> and I represent Friends of Parkside, Sunset, and West Portal (FOPSWP), a group of concerned neighbors and business owners who are strongly opposed to the Green Mirror cannabis dispensary that is currently undergoing review at the Office of Planning. We are in opposition to the dispensary for the following
reasons:

1) The Green Mirror (proposed name) will be located on the second floor of the Gold Mirror Restaurant with address 800 Taraval Street (corner of 18th Ave & Taraval Street). The dispensary will share the same business entrance and address as the restaurant, which means non-cannabis clientele, including minors, will have access to the
dispensary.

2) The traffic from the dispensary will add to an already congested intersection with limited parking, and which is surrounded by day-care centers, pre-schools, martial arts schools, pediatric dental offices, residential buildings, MUNI stops, a large Safeway supermarket, and not to mention St. Cecelia's Elementary School, which is less than 2 blocks away. A dispensary at this location will increase the risk and danger for hundreds of vehicles and pedestrians, mostly young children, who cross the intersection each day to attend school activities and dental appointments, to shop, meet friends, etc.

3) We are not alone. Our volunteers have collected almost one-thousand combined hand and online signatures from residents, business owners, and building owners, who support our cause and would like to put a stop to any cannabis dispensary in our neighborhood. 

Finally, we understand that the city is hungry for money from these types of businesses and that there is a priority to open as many dispensaries as possible. At the same time, the Gold Mirror restaurant is a landmark business in the Sunset, having been in business since 1969, and, as you may know, the owners have relations with public officials in high positions. It is our sincere hope that these financial and political interests do not outweigh the safety and welfare of the residents in our neighborhood. We already have a deficit of police in our area, an epidemic of graffiti, a growing homeless population, as well as automotive sideshows not being monitored by the police. Therefore, to introduce another disruptive element into our quiet, child-centric community is appalling.

Dear Friends & Neighbors, In case you missed it, we held our housing townhall last Tuesday, 2/13, at Miraloma Clubhouse. We had a modest turnout, and an excellent dialogue with panelists and neighbors surrounding the pros and cons of the new housing mandates. Matt Boschetto, who is running for D7 Supervisor, hosted and moderated the townhall. I believe there will be a video recording of the event coming out soon. I will share it with you when it is ready. In Part 1 of this blog,  I wrote how the new densification and upzoning laws are being forced upon the city by the state, without proper feedback or consensus from the neighborhoods themselves. One of the panelists at the townhall, Mr. Corey Smith, from  Housing Action Coalition , made it clear that municipalities no longer have the choice of "opting out" of these new laws. What About the Housing Mandates (Part 1/2)

Dear Friends & Neighbors, If you have been following the new housing mandates and rezoning laws in the least bit, you are probably confused and shocked about what is going to happen in our District 7. Please click here to see a map of the new up zoning. I have attended two housing townhall meetings in recent weeks, one in D4, hosted by Sunset United Neighborhoods , and one in D3, hosted by Telegraph Hill Dwellers . And judging by the reactions from the crowds, people are not happy. There is more to the housing debate than what meets the eye. In a nutshell, Sacramento wants us to believe that California has a housing crisis and more construction is needed to meet the state's housing needs. So the state is essentially mandating that San Francisco, along with other cities, propose and pass all sorts of new rules and regulations to meet these needs.  Building more houses is normal and necessary, The problem arises when Sacramento decides to force cities to comply with its mandates...

Matt Boschetto for D7 Supervisor

Dear Friends & Neighbors, I am a registered Democrat voter. However, I find it ironic how Democrats demonize Donald Trump and the Republican party, accusing them as being authoritarian with no regard for laws, rules, or the democratic process, while at the same time,  Democrats are guilty of doing the same thing. I am not a Trump supporter as I do agree he has an authoritarian bent, but at the same time I do not support hypocrisy and authoritarian threats from my own party, and will point it out wherever I see it. For example, in my last blog, I wrote about my own neighborhood's voice being stripped and crippled when we objected to the Gold Mirror cannabis dispensary opening on 18th Ave & Taraval St., or how our neighbors' voices across the state of California are consistently suppressed for their opposition to the new housing laws and regulations that are being forced upon our cities, including San Francisco, by state officials.
